Australian Scrub Python ( Morelia amethistina kinghorni )
The Australian Scrub Python is Australia's largest snake. Its latin name is derived from amethyst because when viewed in sunlight, its body gives off an amythest-colored sheen. This snake is also referred to as the Amethystine Python. Srub Pythons are nocturnal, but often wake during the day to sun themselves.
Distribution & Habitat:
Tropics and subtropical climates and prefers forest habitats.
Diet:
Prey on animals including fruit bats, possums, rats, and birds.
Breeding:
Females lays up to 20 eggs per clutch, annually. The female incubates the eggs for approximately 2 months by coiling herself aroud the eggs and shivering to produce body heat.
