Inland Taipan ( Oxyuranus microlepidotus )

The Inland Taipan is the most venomous snake on the planet. It's pseudonym is the "fierce snake". The snake's venom is so potent that it can kill a man in as little as 45 minutes. The incredible thing about the snake is that there are no known fatalities due to an inland taipan despite one bite containing enough venom to kill 100 men. It is generally a brown colour which varies with the seasons, with the head region usually darker than the rest of the body. As with most snakes, a fair degree of variance in skin tone always occurs between individuals.

Distribution & Habitat:

Found in the arid regions of Australia, away from major populations centres. They live in rodent's burrows and in amongst rocks and crevices.

Diet:

The diet consists of mostly rodents, although they will take an opportunist meal of a stray bird or the occasional lizard.

Breeding:

This snake lays eggs, with the hatching occurring 10 weeks or so after the eggs were laid. Once laid, the mother leaves the eggs and subsequent young to their own devices.

Conservation Status:

Not Threatened
