Thorny Devil (lizard) ( Moloch horridus )

The Thormy Devil is a unique-looking animal. AS itsname implies, it has numerous little horns all over its body, with a pair of large horns above its eyes. It also has a large, horned bump on its neck, that is thought to be used as a decoy to help the animal protect itself. Its coloring is a mix of neutral, earthy tones such as brown, tan, sandy orange and yellow. It is an ectotherm, mening it gets its heat from external sources. Often times, Thorny Devils can be spotted sunning themselves in the early morning or late afternoon hours.

Distribution & Habitat:

Found in arid climates of Australia, particularly in Western Australia, Norhtern Australia, Queensland and South Australia. Theses creatures thrive in sandy areas (like deserts) grass and scrub lands.

Diet:

The Thorny Devil is partial to ants and eats many varieties of them.

The Thorny Devil starts breeding when it is 3 years old. It attracts a mate through gestures such as bobbing its head and waving its little legs. In warmer climates, the incubation period is shorter.

approximately 20 years
