Western Tiger Snake ( Notechis scutatus occidentalis )
The Western Tiger Snake is amongst Australia's most deadly snake species. If left untreated, a bite from this snake results in more than a 60% fatality rate. The term tiger refers to the alternating bands of color, similar to those of a tiger, found on this species. Although there is a huge variety within the species, they tend to be dark green/black/brown with a contrasting underside. The Western Tiger snake can be found in forests, grasslands, and coastal areas in the southern half of Australia and southern islands (Tasmania).
